Chapel Family Story.
The story of a member of the Marchington family from Dove Holes, who emigrated to Canada to seek his fortune by joining the Klondike Gold Rush at the turn of this century, is a half-truth told by my Grandfather (Robert.1964). Like all stories & legends there is some truth in the tale but the fantasy in the storyteller adds to the story & likewise the story grows as it is passed down from generation to generation. David Marchington explains below the reason for many an emigration to the New World.  According to Don Buckley who currently farms at Sittinglow farm his relatives being Hallam's also left for  Canada on the same ship as John Samuel. Don states that many families emigrated around this time answering News paper added to do so.
There are stories of other members of the family that have also emigrated to the USA, Australia & South Africa and many other families from the High Peak area.

Information supplied by David Marchington. 1958. Ottawa, Canada.
The 1881 census shows William at Cross Cottages, with his family. There are 3 or so cottages joined together, and the furthest one on the east side was a stable at one time. The building is made of limestone and when I was there in 1989, I met a nice lady by the name of " Queenie" Fletcher. William was the youngest brother and had to work in the quarry. I don't know what Samuel did, but the oldest brother John, inherited Halstead farm.

William died of silicosis at age 45, leaving my great grand father John Samuel and his new wife Sarah Hartle to care for the younger brothers. Sarah did not want their sons to work in the quarry so she convinced her husband to go to Canada in 1905 and with their oldest son Bob they worked for a year or so and then brought the rest of the family to Toronto. They did write home to tell friends about opportunities in Canada and as a result , many more families came to Toronto. John Samuel and three of his sons joined various regiments of the Canadian Expeditionary Force and fought in The Great War. My grandfather Frank was the youngest in the family. Family Photo taken in 1908

John Douglas Marchington.1884 also emigrated to Canada he being the son of John Sam.1854 & Sarah Kelly, 2nd cousin the branch above, he died in active service in the Great War. John was 34 years old when he died and was married with a child called Douglas.

David Marchington, explains the origins of some of the place names featuring the Marchington name in Canada.

Marchington Lake & River. Derived its name from John Samuels son William Marchington. William, who was a Parliamentary writer and later editor of Canada's national newspaper the 'Globe & Mail'. William also wrote for a couple of English newspapers. William had a golfing buddy  who was a Cartographer, and as such he asked to use William's surname to name areas in the 'back country' of Ontario.

Marchington Circle is a city street name in Scarborough, which as become part of Metropolitan Toronto.
