Peterloo massacre 16th August 1819 | ||||
Its recorded that the following Shelmerdine persons were present at the
Peterloo
event: 1. Robert Shelmerdine, of 6 Richmond Row, Pendleton, Salford, he was treated for his injuries, its suggested he's a Yeoman in the link below but such would need to be verified. Richmond Row in the Trade Directories is probably a row of shops or a row of dwellings as we see today examples of such rows of Terrance shops or house, 6 or more in a row with a name and date plague in the middle of the row. [event link] 2. Thomas Shelmerdine, a member of the Yeoman Cavalry working for John Collyer, dryer, Springfield Lane, Salford. Thomas is recorded as a casualty receiving treatment but we find that Thomas was in the thick of the fighting and he was riding his horse as a Yeoman charging into the crowd with his Sabre sword slashing individuals as he rode through, and he's recorded wounding individuals on the day. Thomas was indicted at the inquest held in Oldham a witness called Margaret Goodwin who knew him from a child, Margaret gave evidence as follows: ![]() Its likely Thomas was enlisted into the role of Yeoman by his place of work and boss John Collyer who operated on Springfield lane besides the river Irwell and only 1/2 mile to Petersfield. I would assume Thomas would have done weekly or fortnightly drills with other members of the militia who were setup and funded by the wealth industrial and civil office elite to protect their interests. So Thomas would have loaned the Mill owners horse, probably a working horse of the mill , Thomas would have known the people attending the gathering pretty well given its a local community so I guess after this event he was ostracized and push out of his fellow friends and maybe extended family?? Intresting link that Thomas father is a dyer by trade so he may have worked at the same Mill? Our William Shelmerdine who was around 45 years old at the time of the event may have been present and given he was a lowly paid Hatter, we could assume he would have been one of the demonstrators and if so, it would show the disparity within families who are divided by wealth, status and their personal situation. |
